About Focus
Sit in a quiet place, let your mind wander and write down your thoughts using your nondominant hand. Don’t try to formulate coherent concepts, just write down the first words that come to mind, with no regard for grammar or coherence.
The purpose of this exercise is to help you appreciate your unconscious and bodily intelligences, which are often deemed less valuable than rational thought.
Lost memories, instinctive drives, strange emotions, and various skills such as writing, playing an instrument, craft dexterity, athletic ability, rhythm, and balance are stored in those intelligences, all below the threshold of thought.
You will be in for two revelations.
The first is realizing how much we take handwriting for granted once it becomes second nature, and how challenging hand-eye coordination is for both adults and children.
The second is noticing your random and unraveled stream of consciousness is neither unraveled nor random.
There are concepts behind the unglued ravings, misspellings and twisted words; those concepts, as elusive as an unseen presence, reveal the depths of your unconscious, and you will be surprised by what they have to tell you.
